Shamanic Breathwork – combining the science of modern breathing therapy with traditional methods of consciousness work
As early as 1986, scientists discovered that the brain regulates its own excitability by regulating the breath. How much something or events on the outside affect me, or not, whether something scares me or not, is usually beyond my conscious control. Sometimes I feel good for no reason, sometimes bad for no reason, I have no conscious thoughts or explanations for it. Emotional arousal and feelings seem to be connected to the subconscious. I can only influence them to a limited extent, at best I can keep them in check cognitively through thought discipline, whereby emotions and feelings are permanently suppressed through self-imposed coercion or anaesthesia, which is by no means healthy and cannot be recommended. So how can I access my subconscious in a healthy way?
Conscious breathing creates a bridge between consciousness and subconsciousness. Neurologists have long since established that the breath is connected to our autonomic nervous system – it breathes in me even when I am not consciously thinking about it. At the same time, every inhalation activates the sympathetic nervous system and every exhalation activates the parasympathetic nervous system. Conscious breathing allows me to perceive. Sometimes images, information, impulses from our subconscious can emerge in such moments of silence. This is why the longing for spiritual mystical experiences is growing in our over-technologised and digitalised world. We focus on the breath, become calmer and suddenly we SEE things differently. Everyday situations that just now seemed threatening or frightening suddenly lose their horror. Conscious breathing seems to change something, to regulate our brain in such a way that we get a different view of reality. Max Planck, the quantum physicist, said: ‘By looking at reality, it changes.’
Everything is stored in our subconscious, even what we are not consciously aware of and have not consciously perceived in the past. But the whole reality as we have consciously perceived it and also that which we have not consciously perceived is stored in the subconscious. Everything that we no longer consciously remember and also our unconscious actions are stored in the subconscious. This has already been sufficiently researched by pioneers of transpersonal psychology such as Stanislav Grof, who developed his ‘Cartography of the Subconscious’ in the 1960s.
The subconscious also has a reference to our magical part, because it is connected to the whole universe, it feels, sees, hears and perceives everything, just as in many ancient cultures of the world the universe was seen as the great ‘nameless one’ from which everything arises and in which everything passes away. Our brain filters our sensory impressions, we only perceive a fraction of what we could perceive because there would be far too much information for our brain to process. The information that would be too much is passed on to the subconscious, because this data store is ‘infinite’. In shamanic philosophy, everything we do and everything we say is stored in infinity. The challenge is clear: to be mindful of our words and actions.
The infinity of the universe is connected to the infinity of the subconscious. That is why flashes of inspiration, symbols and signs keep emerging from our subconscious to draw our attention from ‘infinity’ to something with a deeper meaning in our current life situation. The signs can appear inside us or outside. But what was there first, if you permanently dream and create your reality? Who is talking to you and wants to get in touch with you when you suddenly see a white feather on the pavement as you walk through the city? Science says that breath is the connection between consciousness and subconsciousness. How is your subconscious doing today? Breathe and listen for the answer. We can access our subconscious through our breath.
I invite you to consciously breathe in and out a few times and then pay attention to the signs that appear for you from the universe. What signs have you received today? And what do they want to tell you? I look forward to reading about your experience in the comments.
